Cybersecurity Industry Report 2021 – A must have for digital security

Cybersecurity focuses on protecting against any unauthorized and unwanted access to computers, networks, programs, and data. With the advent of digitization, the amount of data being generated has grown in leaps and bounds. Governments, corporations, and individuals collect, process, and store vast amounts of confidential information and transmit that data across networks.

Cyber security threats have been predominantly seeking an upward trend from the early stages of pandemic and companies have taken proactive measures as to maintain the confidentiality of the business.

Cyber threats have become one of the top ten global risks today, and among the most likely high-impact risks, according to the World Economic Forum. Cyber threats originate from number of sources including hostile governments, terrorist groups, malicious intruders and insiders, among others. In the past few years, there has been an increase in cyberattacks of unprecedented sophistication. The attacks are growing in a technically advanced way. Malware, spam and phishing remain the most frequent method of attack.

Due to the heavy dependency on computers in a modern industry that store and transmit an abundance of confidential and essential information about the people, cybersecurity is a critical function and needed insurance of many businesses.

Enterprises across the world are recognizing cybersecurity as a key area of investment and are allocating greater budget towards the same. Despite the higher spending by corporations on cybersecurity solutions, many still remain underinvested and underprepared. They are under constant attack from increasingly urbane criminals.

Why is cybersecurity important?

The digital era is convenient for both governments and criminals to access data and it is really important to beware of it as the sensitive information passed through digital platform is more vulnerable and if misused by hackers the consequences will be claustrophobic such as military and hospital classified data.

Some well known measures against cyber attacks for work from home environment are :

•   Antivirus protection-Employees should be provided with a license to antivirus and malware software for use on their personal computers. Although this does not provide failsafe protection, it eliminates many low-level attacks.

•   Cybersecurity awareness-Staff should be briefed on best practices and procedures to regulate the sending of emails or other content to private email addresses or cloud storage.

•   Phishing awareness-Employees should be vigilant when receiving emails and should check the authenticity of the sender’s address.

•   Home network security-Employees should ensure that their home WiFiis protected by a strong password.

•   Use a VPN-Virtual private networks add a further layer of protection to internet use from home. They cannot on their own be relied upon to prevent cyberattacks, but they can be a useful barrier against cyberattack.

Healthcare was the leading industry for cyberattacks and data breaches in Q420. Since 1 November, 2020 there has been an increase of over 45% in the number of attacks against healthcare organizations globally, compared to an average 22% increase in attacks against other industry sectors.
